Proses ini tidak menghasilkan pemisahan utuh, tetapi hanya dalam dua campuran dengan konstituen yang lebih mudah menguap atau kurang mudah menguap. Pada fase uap, semakin banyak komponen volatil terakumulasi yang dipisahkan dan dikondensasikan (distilat). Konstituen volatil yang paling berat tetap berada dalam fase cair.
